Server made it!

Friday, March 11th, 2005

Well, the server in question made it to IL, and with one tweak, I had access to the server. Makes me feel so good I can deliver on a timeline I did not think would ever happen.

Server got installed, storage got allocated, and a database will be laid down on the system over the weekend.

On a unrelated subject, we got some real nice weather this afternoon. The ground was just below freezing, and we got some nice fluffy, but moist snow. As the snow was compacted down, made a solid sheet of ice on the freeway. Fun!

Work, Fun with friends

Thursday, March 10th, 2005

Well,
This weeks goal was to have a server up and running in IL 48 hours after it left MN. The server made it down to IL, but I can not talk to it. The fact that all the parts are in place, is just amazing.

Tonight was a good work recovery session. In addition to my three friends doing the normal Thursday night, a 4th friend and his wife made it over for the evening. It was very nice spending the evening together.

Yay, stock showed up

Wednesday, March 9th, 2005

As part of an award I got from work, it included 10 shares of company stock. I am not use to this whole paper thing, so I was not sure what to do with the paper stock certificate I had received. I got it deposited to my ameritrade account, and it showed up in the account today. Now that’s in a database some place, I feel much better. Most people feel better with the paper, but I feel better with my data being a row in a database some place. Silly me.

Sister going off for more edumication

Tuesday, March 8th, 2005

Well, Today I found out that my sister got accepted for an internship down in champagne, IL. She is working on being a Vet (the animal kind) and wants to work on small animal surgery. After this spring, she will get her DVM from the U of M, then she starts a 2 to 4 year internship program to work on the surgery aspects of the career. It is sad seeing her go, but she will be back!

Day off,. almost

Monday, March 7th, 2005

I came so close to having a day off work today. I had signed up to take a beta Solaris 10 exam, about an hour before going to the exam, it turned out that we had backup problems with snapshots again. I need to sit down and find a way to make this process more stable. Are we doing something that is so far out there? am I pushing the technology to hard? Did they have these types of problems with HDS shadow? Did I not test enough? I need to watch it.

So, I got to the exam center, took the test, and learned some good stuff. Got home, played with snapshots a bit and watched TV. nothing to exciting, which is what I wanted today.

work day = wet bastment

Sunday, March 6th, 2005

Well, it was a nice warm day, got up to 60 degrees today, which is not bad for the first week of March. Unfortunately this also meant a wet basement again, I filled up the wet/dry vac three or four times. I may need to look in to getting some re-grading done.

Another accomplishment for the day is getting tires rotated, something I should have done 10,000 miles ago, but it was cold back then.

Tonight I went to see Larry the cable guy, who is doing his 6th show in the twin cities, it was a real good show. I am not sure if I am going to see Ron White, because when I got the Larry tickets, the theater opted me in to a spam list.

To get to the show, I used the Minneapolis light rail line, it was not bad. Drove to a park location about 5 minutes away, took the train in, and walked about 5 minutes.

Low key day, rum, scotch and ikea

Sunday, March 6th, 2005

Today was supposed to be a very nice day, but it was not. I was in bed until about 11:00am, then watched TV. went to the liquor store, as we finished off several bottles of stuff Thursday night. I got a bottle of Brugal Viejo rum, hoping its as good as the extra viejo rum. It is rum from the Dominican republic that is aged (extra viejo is 8 years, viejo is 5 years). It goes down real smooth. I also picked up a bottle of Oban 14 year scotch, and a bottle of captain Morgan.

I also went to Ikea and picked up several items. Got a wall clock, and a fold down table for my living room.

It was then off to my friends house for an evening of bad movies.

Recovery day

Friday, March 4th, 2005

Well. with the news last night, we all got a bit liberated last night. For someone that does fairly good, I did get in to work a bit late and had a bit of a headache. Today was moving day for several people at work. They are doing some cube re-locations, and many folks are moving upstairs. Luckily our group did not need to leave our nice area.

Not much productive work done today, some storage stuff and that’s about it.

At home, I managed to get my windows box back, it involved:
1. getting the box restored from netbackup IDR
2. doing an overlay install of Windows XP
3. Apply service pack and updates
4. rename my accounts “documents and settings” folder
5. re-add my user
6. remove the newly created docs and settings folder, move mine back
7. boot off recovery CD, copy backup registry in place
8. still no werky.
9. replaced the rebuild “system” registry file with the one I had put in place
10. system works, for the most part.

man am I happy.

Good days

Friday, March 4th, 2005

Today was just a great day for me and for friends. Today I got together with HR, and human resources is going to forward my paperwork for a promotion off to my manager. It will now go through several levels of management, but it is at least moving forward now. I feel good about it. I am hoping that it will go forward before the next review cycle is complete, but we will see.

Good news for a friend is that her and her boyfriend have committed to a long term relationship. She has had marriage issues in the past, so she is avoiding the word engagement. We hear horror stories from her about her job so often, its great to see something positive happen to a good person.

Continued windows recovery

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2005

Well, I am still working on getting my Windows back box, and man is it getting annoying. I have recovered the box from netbackup, and not it refuses to boot. I think next is to disable drivers, and try some registry hacks. At least I can get to it from the recovery console.
