Hacking the PS2

Monday, February 7th, 2005

I spent today playing with my PS2. One thing I hate doing is swapping my PS2 disks every time I play a game, so I got one of those HDD loader utilities. I also have been playing with the networking as well.

Today I installed a Nintendo emulator on my PS2. It was fun playing super mario brothers on my 57″ tv set. It is also amazing how fast SSX3 loads off of the hard drive instead of using the dvd-rom drive.

Superbowl

Sunday, February 6th, 2005

Well,
The active directory migration went as expected last night, got home about 4:00am and went to sleep. I watched some tv this evening, played with my PS2 and watched the superbowl. I found it interesting, watching TV Ads in HD. I was wondering when I would start seeing ads in 16:9, and it was kind of nice to see. I was kind of pissed, someone on IRC mentioned the result of the game before I finished watching it, but thats the price I pay for time shifting TV.

The falls…

Sunday, February 6th, 2005

Well, today was a very nice day, temps made it to the 50’s, which is very impressive for February. I relaxed this morning, and then this afternoon I went to minnehaha falls. First thing I discovered was that they do not appear to maintain the paths during the window. After i slushed my down the slippery and wet path, I made it to the falls. With the hot temperatures this week, I expected it to be somewhat thawed out, but it was still frozen solid.

AD going in, time for real work

Saturday, February 5th, 2005

I spent most of thursday in the Active Directory lab, getting final bugs worked out with the NT admins. We seem to have worked through all of the issues, and we are set for active directory to go in this weekend.

Because of the progress yesterday, I was able to spend today doing real work. I am working on replacing our netbackup master server (a E4500) with a V880. With luck, this will go in next wendsday.

Solaris 10 SunPCI II tricks

Friday, February 4th, 2005

Ok, here is what I had to do to get my SunPCI II card working with Solaris 10 at work:
1. Install SUNWspci2 v2.3.2
2. Install patch 113616-06
3. In /opt/SUNWspci2/drivers/solaris link sunpcidrv.2100 -> sunpcidrv.290
4. link sunpcidrv2100.64 -> sunpcidrv.290.64
5. Run sunpcload to load the kernel modules
6. Boot up the sunpci card as you normally would, life is good again.

SunPCI2 should now work - with one exception that I found
I ran across a problem that the passthru ethernet driver would cause my sun to panic on a bad trap. To fix this, I booted Windows 2k in single user mode, and disabled the sun NDIS device in device manager. The SIS network interface on the sunpci card does still function.

Solaris 10 installed - home

Thursday, February 3rd, 2005

Well, got Solaris 10 installed and running at home. Had to compile several items, but I found many items in /usr/sfw/bin. I with Sun would just pick a directory and stick with it! /usr/bin, /opt/bin, /usr/sfw/bin, /opt/sfw/bin. bah!

Looks like the biggest change for me will be getting use to svcadm. I am going to need to spend some time reading over the whats new docs.

The other anoying thing is that I cant get firefox to compile (I want postscript printing!)

Solaris 10

Tuesday, February 1st, 2005

Early this morning I finished downloading Solaris 10. I now have it installed on a lab server at work, and on my Ultra 60 here at home. At work most of the day was spent with fires, so I did not get much of a chance to play with it. At home after work I spent most of my time getting apps compiled.

So far, I have found the SunLogo desktop backdrop is not in CDE, and I can not get the SolarisLogo one working. I managed to get xchat, pan and gaim compiled, as well as sudo and top. I did need to compile a new gettext, because the one with solaris did not work for some reason.

Early morning tomorrow, so off to bed.
